A Day in Chicago for (mostly) FREE (+ More Free Ideas)

Looking for some free family fun in Chicago? The Windy City offers a bounty of awesome free activities. We stopped there during a road trip from the South to the West and everything we did was free, minus the food we ate.

We started our day with brunch at Toast in the Bucktown neighborhood (2046 North Damen Ave), where we stayed with friends. There is another Toast located near Lincoln Park (746 W Webster Ave). My husband finds the best local places to eat (he should have a blog) and this did not disappoint.

I had pancakes and they were amazing.

Next, we went to the Lincoln Park Zoo and I cannot say enough great things about this place. Not only is it FREE 365 days out of the year, but it is a fantastic zoo- way better than many zoos I've paid to enter!

They have every animal you'd want to see in a zoo from alligators to giraffes to sea lions to polar bears. And it is completely free! They do have food and souvenirs for sale, but you do not have to spend a dime if you choose not to.

I fell in love with this pygmy hippo!

After the zoo, we took a walk downtown to see the sites and buildings.

We went to Millennium Park, home of the famous Cloud Gate sculpture, also known as "the bean."

Millennium park is totally free, of course, and holds a myriad of sculptures to look at, as well as a garden. It also is a great place to take skyline photos.

It was dinner time by this point, so we, of course, got some deep dish pizza from Giordano's. My mouth is watering just thinking about the cheesy goodness of this pizza! This is our Chicagoan friends' favorite deep dish place and it was amazing.

We ended the evening by seeing some more sites in the dark.

Our itinerary was a lot of fun and a great introduction to Chicago. Best of all, everything was free, except the food!
