Little Mermaid Family Costume (With Flounder Tutorial)

Over the weekend, we held our Fall Retreat for the college ministry for which my husband and I work. Every year, we have a themed costume dance. This year, our students chose Disney/Pixar as the theme. So, we went as Ariel, Eric, and Flounder!

I was a modest Ariel, obviously. :-) I found the skirt and top at Goodwill and I bought the wig on Amazon for less than $10. My husbands pretty much had everything for Eric because his costume is easy.

The star of our trio clearly was our little Flounder.

I made her costume and it was super easy-no sewing required!

Here's how I did it!

Tutu Fin: Making a tutu is super easy. All you need is elastic and some tulle or organza. I used two rolls of glitter tulle and one roll of glitter organza from Joann's.

First measure how much elastic you will need around the child's waist. Cut and tie. Then, you need to cut the tulle/organza into strips double the length you want the tutu to be. Last, you tie the tulle/organza around the elastic until it is full.

To tie:

Double the tulle/organza by folding it in half. Place on the inside of the elastic circle to tie.

Next, bring up the two end pieces of the tulle/organza and pull them through the loop, around the elastic.

Pull tight. Continue to do this with each strip, pushing them close together. If you have fat elastic (like I did), then it will fold over in half as you tie on the strips. That's OK! It will still work. Actually, it will be sturdier.

When you can no longer fit anymore tulle/organza, you will have a beautiful tutu!

For the Shirt: All you need is a yellow shirt. I found one at H&M for less than $5. I made the stripes with blue washi tape. For the blue fins, I looped some leftover organza and tape them to the sleeves with hem tape.

For the blue "hair:" I bought two blue tiaras in the Dollar Spot of Joann's. I took the tiaras off of the headbands and glued them together. Then, I reattached them to one headband, but rotated them to like a mohawk.

My little Flounder had a blast dancing with college students! My husband is a good sport participating in my costume love.

Delightfully Creating,
