Magnetic Chore Chart Inspired By Melissa and Doug {Faux Friday}

Every Other Friday is "Faux Friday" where I feature a knock-off project of my own or someone else's.

My sister searched high and low for an adequate chore chart for her kids, but to no avail. She found this one by Melissa and Doug and liked the concept, but wanted different chores.

So, she consulted me- I have to say, I'm honored when people ask me to create things for them! My sister doesn't do crafts. She's the brainy, practical one and I am the artsy, crazy one. But we are still BFF.

She wanted a chore chart that did the job, but I had to make it aesthetically pleasing too! It would be a cardinal sin of crafting not to!

Here's what I came up with.

I love how it turned out!  I loved it even more when my niece quipped, "Auntie! How did you make this?" Ha. She builds my self-esteem.

Here's how I did it:

Materials:
  • Magnetic White Board (I got this one at Target for $12)
  • 12 x 12 Scrapbook paper (the striped paper is Imaginisce Twitterpated Colorfall from Michael's and the blue is My Mind's eye fro Michael's)
  • Ribbon (I had this on hand)
  • double stick tape
  • permanent fine tip marker
  • ruler
  • Magnetic paper (I found mine at Hobby Lobby)
  • 1 "wooden discs (found at any craft store)
  • 1 " Circle Punch
  • Letter Stickers
  • Mod Podge
  • Round craft magnets
 How To:

1. First, I measured out the striped paper and cut it with a paper slicer. For the chart, I used the whole 12x12 square. After cutting the papers to size, I attached them to the board using double stick tape. This was much neater than glue or Mod Podge!

2. Before attaching the blue paper, I measured out the chart and drew it using a ruler and a fine tip permanent marker.

3. After attaching all the paper, I attached the ribbon using double stick tape-diy ribbon tape! I love using double stick tape with ribbon. Glue seeps through ribbon a lot of times.

4. I then labeled the "responsibilities" and days of the week with letter stickers. I brushed a thin coat of Mod Podge over these areas to seal the letters. I also mistakenly tried to Mod Podge the chart area. BIG MISTAKE! It bubbled up and I had to re-draw the chart and re-attach it. Thank God I used double stick tape-it made it much easier to fix my mistakes!

5. I made the chore magnets on my computer and printed them on magnet paper. I turned them into jpeg files, so you can have them too! Just right click and save.

6. To make the smiley magnets, I punched out different colored circles with a circle punch and drew my own smiley faces. I Mod Podged them onto the wooden circles and glued the magnets to the back.

My sister hung up the chart near her refrigerator and keeps the extra smileys on the side of her fridge.

Delightfully Creating,
